The lobby is small and recently updated. Video surveillance is in the lobby. A recently renovated corridor I saw was so-so. Rooms 402 and 403 were basic, fairly recent, clean - not horrible. Rooms 205 and 206 had been recently updated, but they also did not excite me.

Maids were cleaning like crazy while I was there, like somebody had taken a whip to them.

The hotel is cheap. You can sleep in a clean place. It doesn't have the same comfort as the elite hotels though.

"Half lux" suites are available for 1800 rubles (3/30/2004).

The first entrance to the hotel said that the hotel was closed. We went inside and the security men there said the Vostok was closed and they had no idea when it would re-open. "Okay," I thought. "Case closed." Five minutes later we stumbled upon another hotel entrance to the Vostok! And they were open and ready to receive guests! Strange!

Prices range from 1600 to 6620 rubles. None of the rooms have air conditioning. I was first taken to an area with a recently updated corridor. Room 209 was nice, but reeked of heavy cigarette smoke. There is no way I could stay in that room for more than a few minutes without getting sick to my stomach. It was bad.

Room 223 had a nice bathroom. The bedroom was okay, but the single bed was a little short.

Then I went to the third floor and it is old, old, old. Beat! Definitely a Russian hotel. Sometimes I forget I'm in Russia at some of the nicer hotels, but not here.

- Standard room 317 was old and had a musty smell. Paint was peeling off the bathroom ceiling.

- Room 326 is a "half lux" and is not bad. The carpet is a little bit worn. My guess is the room was updated around 5 years ago.

- Room 321 was old and musty. The bed is a little bigger than a normal standard room. Paint was peeling off the bathroom ceiling.

- Room 314 had a really low bed. I don't like those kinds of beds. There was no musty smell and no paint peeling off the bathroom ceiling. It had a 20" TV and a refrigerator.

- Room 521 had slight smells and a 13" TV. It had been recently updated.

I didn't think the hotel was that bad, but my assistant Tatiana had harsher words: "It was not disgusting, but I wanted to run away as soon as possible."
