A Hotel That Needs
A New General Manager

I had a strange experience here. Entrance to the parking lot by anyone (by car or foot) is strict. It is so strict, it is unusual. This can be a good thing though. Then I encountered another security guard in the small lobby of this building. His questions were odd and suspicious, like: "Who let you in? What are you doing here?"

Then we approached the desk of who we thought we needed to speak to. I had a very strong initial impression that this woman was a complete bitch. Hmm... I was right! She said we could not see any of their apartments because they were all occupied. We had called before arriving to make sure we could see the place. My assistant Tatiana explained that we had been to more than 100 Moscow hotels and were compiling a travellers resource for Moscow hotels and that it was important that I get as much information as possible. Tatiana asked if we could see any of the apartments that the housekeeping staff were working on. The hotel employee opened up what looked like a personal diary, flipped through some pages, and said "Nyet." (Like, we bought that). Whatever. So we leave the room and I stop walking to write notes in my notepad. Then we hear the two women that were in that room saying all kinds of bad stuff about us! She calls the security guard and says "Why did you let them in?! These people are very strange asking all kinds of questions..." ect., ect. So, Tatiana is trying not to laugh as we are listening to that wicked, lazy woman (who should have her ass fired for sabotaging her employer with such a poor attitude towards anyone that bugs her). (Why do you guys keep her?) Then we notice there is a door marked "Marketing Manager." We decide to knock on her door. Success! We got to see 3 apartments! (Ha! They were not all occupied!)

The apartments were not bad. Apartment 112 goes for 2760 rubles. It's clean. It's got a bathroom with a washer, a so-so toilet room and room for 3 people, including a kitchen.

I saw apartment 187 and it goes for 2750 rubles. It's got old style bathrooms, but I like the kitchens in these units.

Apartment 188 is big. Its got a master bedroom suite with a closet and its own bathroom with a big jacuzzi-like tub, plus a sauna, kitchen, dining room, another bathroom and toilet room (both so-so quality) and another bedroom, and maybe one more... I forget. This one goes for 4460, and it is for up to 3 people. Each additional person adds 500 rubles to the price, but children under 14 are free.

We were told that one person had been living there for 10 years, although I have doubts because of the source of that info (that communist piece of hotel scum who we first spoke with).

Well, apartments are cheap here and the place is not far from the metro. They also have an interesting 17th floor restaurant - not great, but a little bit interesting. But, if you go to their neighborhood competitor, Orekhovo, I think you will be much better off. The quality is better there across all categories of hotel offerings. Everything is better.

Would I Stay Here? After today's experience, I would prefer to stay someplace else, like the nearby, far superior Radisson.

I Arrived With High Expectations...
...And Left With Huge Disappointment.
 The best thing about it? The nearby Pinocchio's
Pizza Restaurant!

I came to the Hotel Ukraina with great expectations. The Leningradskaya Hotel, which has a similar building, was fascinating to see and I had heard that the Ukraina was a mixture of old and new. I expected it to be better.

Well, I got on the elevator and saw some guest floors in this 849 room hotel. The corridors are old. I got a peak at some guest rooms, thanks to the cleaning ladies. The rooms have hardwood floors, and old furnishings. I imagine the rooms from the top floors must have some very interesting views.

I was given the impression this hotel was a really nice place, before I visited. Now I think it is just so-so. The Leningradskaya Hotel, which has similar Stalinst architecture, is far more interesting in my opinion.

In exploring the neighborhood around the Ukraina, I found a great little pizza restaurant called "Pinocchio's." This restaurant also has excellent bathrooms. Location: 86/2 Kootoozovski Prospect, behind the hotel.
