* The Finest Mini-Hotel In Moscow *

Wow... it was so refreshing to discover this little gem of a hotel. It is an elegant, beautiful, classy, spotless new hotel in a very good, interesting neighborhood that is close to a metro station near the center of the city. And I was also very surprised that the hotel is managed by a fellow American! Robert Martin from Dallas is in charge here.

The Hotel Tiflis opened in April 2003. It is a very high quality facility with 31 excellent, air conditioned rooms, including a couple really nice 2 story apartments. Twenty more rooms will be added. They purchased the building next door.

The hotel has a delightful pool area in the basement. Just delightful. Plus there is a sauna available for all guests to use without additional charge.

The Tiflis also has two restaurants. As I passed through one of the restaurants, a band was practicing and the singer was doing "New York, New York" ...that Frank Sinatra song. He sounded pretty good too. An authentic Georgian restaurant is downstairs - it certainly is not the usual kind of restaurant you would find at one of the big corporate-owned hotels. I liked it, and I especially liked the water fountain area of the restaurant. The owner of the hotel is a Georgian restaurateur and Robert says he has a lot of pride. It shows in the details of this fine hotel facility.

A doorman in a red suit stands by the front door. There is a well-dressed security guard. The hotel staff are professionally dressed. The lobby is elegant and impressive; the corridors are beautiful. The rooms are very comfortable. It seems that they were decorated in various different ways.

A park is nearby. A sushi restaurant is 2 blocks away. This neighborhood is a nice area to walk around with attractive buildings and other things waiting to be discovered. Pricing is currently $186 to $590 as of 3/31/2004.

This is the best small hotel in the city.

This looks like a college campus. The buildings are 40 years old. There are 7 buildings. One now belongs to the Oochebnick Hotel. The other six buildings belong to the Hotel Tourist. They recommend Building 4 and Building 6 for foreigners since they are of higher quality. Pricing ranges from 900 rubles to 3700 rubles. Breakfast is included. They also have for-pay parking that can handle buses. The business center was closed during my visit because somebody was out to lunch.

In Building 4 I saw a recently renovated lobby. And the fourth floor corridor had also recently been updated. I saw rooms 407 and 413. They were new, but a little plain. Bathrooms are good. Room 407 is considered a suite and has a comfortable bedroom. It has 2 TV sets and includes a kitchen. The main room is plain - it could use some paintings on the walls.

In Building 6 they are renovating the lobby now. It looks like it will be nice. I noticed the front desk person had an attractive, professional uniform. I saw room 213 - I believe the hotel person said it went for 1400 rubles. It had an old bathroom but a good bedroom. Elevators are sort of old Russian elevators. The third floor hall is old but clean. For 1300 rubles you can get a single that is not bad. There is an old bathroom and toilet. Room 325, a "standard superior" room, is just a hair better. Room 421 was nice, bigger. Non-smoking rooms are available. The conference room looks good.

Travellers Guest House     K     +7 (095) 280-4300

Street Address: 50 Bolshaya Pereyaslavskaya Ulitsa, 10th Floor - Moscow, Russia

Travellers Guest House is located inside the mediocre Gasis 1 Hotel - Moscow, Russia

Location: Fair

Staff Speaks English? Yes.

Would I Stay Here? Hmm... I don't know.

This guest house is located inside another hotel, "Gasis 1 Hotel." The facility is basic. I guess that the good thing about it is that you can hook up with other English speaking travellers here. They have dormitory-style beds for $23 (as of 3/27/2004). The neighborhood is not at all interesting or exciting.
