* Machine Guns Across The Street *

I was unable to see the rooms at the 15 room Alrosa. They said they were all full. The hotel is 4 years old. It looks nice and I believe the hotel is owned by a diamond company. The lobby was interesting with cherrywood walls, white marble floor and maroon and cherrywood furniture. The building is air conditioned. There is a nice bar area in the lobby and a small koi pond with the sounds of trickling water. The security guy at the front said in Russian "All the best" in a really snooty way as we departed. It was not in character with the hotel image. Across the street two security guards carried machine guns. This is a good neighborhood. But at rush hour time this side street is bumper to bumper.

* Budget Hotel With Recently Renovated Rooms *

According to their brochure, the Altai has 600 rooms. I visited a recently renovated building of theirs. Pricing ranges from 874.60 to 3936.80 rubles. The lobby was recently renovated. They have a fake fireplace and a water cooler in the lobby, plus a modern elevator.

I visited the third floor first:

  - Room 7306 has a very small bed! It's got an old bathroom, but it's clean.

  - Room 7307 was similar, but with 2 small beds. Both rooms had 13" TVs.

  - Room 7335 has a spacious living room with a 20" TV, plus a nice bedroom area.

  - Room 7334 has a small kitchen, a long, slim living room and a bedroom - it's nice.

  - Room 7360 has a larger kitchen, plus a living room and bedroom

  - Room 7317 is a 2 room suite. It is a clean room, but old and tired with paint peeling on the bathroom ceiling.

  - Room 7224 is considered a "superior." It is nice and comfortable with a 13" TV.

  - Room 7408 is nice as well, and this hallway is nicer than the other I saw. The hall has green carpet and sand-colored walls with sprinkles of green.

  - Room 7404 is a "half lux" - quite comfortable. I'd be very happy in a room like this.

These are all recently renovated within the last 2 or 3 years, and the rooms look new. I think their updated rooms are a good value.
