* Pitiful Lies. Lazy Front Desk Employees *

My assistant on this day was Nadia. She had been by this hotel many times and wondered what the East West was like inside. She expected it to be really nice. Instead she left disappointed. I didn't think it was that bad. They have an interesting little gated front yard with fountains or little ponds in each corner. Too bad the local road is so busy with street noise. The sounds of water could be really nice if it weren't drowned out by all the passing cars.

In the lobby I saw a German Shepard taking a nap! That is unusual for a hotel. The dog was not at all interested in even acknowledging us, so I guess he is safe. I heard the sounds of a video game. ??? I guess the front desk guy was so bored that he was playing a game. When I asked to see their rooms, he left and brought in a young woman. She informed me that it was impossible to see the rooms because they were all full. Hmm, well - that's a good excuse. Except it was a complete lie!

The hotel was opened 12 years ago in this 18th century building. From the lobby, I was not sure if this hotel would be good or bad. They've got a cozy little restaurant on the bottom floor. There is a cash machine. The staircase leading upstairs is an antique, all metal and in very good condition. The decor in the lobby is sort of a lavish, old style. I found the corridors to be a tiny bit gaudy. The rooms were not bad - nothing to be ashamed of. That's right! I saw three rooms! The cleaning lady graciously allowed me to see them. Two were perfectly clean and waiting for the next guest. I was totally lied to by the front desk. That was pitiful. (Note to East West: the hotel business is all about service and hospitality. A lot of your competitors know this.)

Anyway, one room had a musty smell, the others were okay. I guess what I liked the most about this hotel was the little restaurant. Nothing really distinguished the rooms. The rooms are okay. That's it. They promote themselves as a 4 star hotel. I think 3 stars is much more appropriate.

* Owned By The World Trade Center *

The Eridan Apartment Hotel is a 22 floor, 160 apartment complex owned by the World Trade Center. It has a "Best Eastern" affiliation. Diplomats from Saudi Arabia are here plus business people from China, Japan, Turkey and other countries. Some people live here for years and they are mostly family people with children. These furnished apartments are comfortable and feel like a home. A Chinese restaurant is on the ground floor. You never have to step outside to go out to eat. A 24 hour supermarket is on the property. You can have an apartment just for one night or for a long time. One room apartments start at $52 a night and four room apartments go for $112 (as of April 1, 2004). And the price goes down when you stay a long time.

The metro is a long walk - maybe 20 minutes. And there is nothing interesting here. It is known as a "sleeping district." There is nothing but tall apartment buildings here.
