* Poorly Utilized Real Estate *

Geez.... this place is really bad. It's cheap, but be kind to yourself and choose to stay someplace else. This is poorly utilized real estate. Red Square is right down the road. The neighborhood is very desirable. And it is almost unbelievable that such a crappy hotel exists so close to the city's major tourist attractions.

For those that decide to save a few bucks and stay here, you're going to be roughing it. The rooms have a sink with cold water only. If you want to take a shower or use a toilet, you'll have to walk down the hall and use the communal showers and toilets... and they are crappy, dated facilities.

A communal toilet at the Hotel Centralnaya - Moscow, Russia

Maybe this hotel is okay for some Russians. But for western foreigners, this hotel is just not suitable.

The hotel has very tiny elevators that can fit 2 skinny people or maybe one portly person. There are many offices in the hotel, and with all of these different kinds of small businesses in the building, many outsiders are visiting. This gives me concerns for guest security. When I first arrived at the fourth floor, there was no security. Later a security guard was in place. But that lapse was not a good thing.

In visiting the communal toilets, I actually saw one stall that had spray paint graffiti. Check out the photo.

Do yourself a favor - pass on the Centralnaya.

* Unmotivated Staff *

My visit here was a little bit funny. This 400 room hotel was full on March 22, 2004 according to the front desk and it was impossible for me to see the rooms. I was skeptical of their claim and went to a higher up. The next person confirmed that it was impossible to see the rooms because they were all full with guests. Within 5 minutes I was being shown the rooms though. Grudgingly we got somebody to cut us a break and show us what they had. I expected bad rooms. But they've got some brand new rooms! The 13th floor is fine. It's all new. I loved the bathroom in room 1322.

But be warned - the attitude here isn't too good. They are probably poorly paid and poorly managed. We were looked upon with suspicion.

There is a security check as you enter the lobby elevator. That's good. There is a key lady on each floor. That's bad. I hate key ladies. As a hotel guest, I want to come and go as I please.

Un-renovated rooms are clean, but old and tired.

A brand new 8 lane bowling alley is connected to the hotel. There is a really good movie theater down the block and good cafes. A casino is in the hotel lobby and numerous other businesses like a pharmacy, and sellers of beer/alcohol, an oriental restaurant, a shoe shine guy, a magazine kiosk.

Overall, this hotel is so-so. It is far from the center of the city.

Don't expect back flips here.
